After a long, dry summer, rain is usually welcomed by gardeners. However, when heavy downpours continue for days or weeks, even the healthiest gardens can become overwhelmed. Waterlogged lawns, compacted soil, collapsing flower beds and damaged plants are all common during particularly wet winters.
Extended rainfall places pressure on both ornamental and productive gardens. Saturated soil deprives roots of oxygen, encourages fungal diseases and makes plants more vulnerable to pests and structural damage. Lawns become muddy, trees unstable and delicate vegetables prone to rotting before they can be harvested. Fortunately, a few practical steps taken before, during and after heavy rain can dramatically reduce damage and help your garden recover faster.
