They sell most of their heifers but keep the smaller calves for themselves or send them to auctions at Lions River. Kevin and Bruce also retain about 60 % of their calves annually and raise them on the open veld. They buy one or two bulls every year to improve the genetics of the herds and sell unregistered bulls directly off the farm.

According to Kevin, cattle farming in this region requires patience and adaptability. Conditions can become extremely dry, and grazing must be managed carefully throughout the year.“ Once you lose your grass cover, it takes time to recover.”

Goats need more than good grazing
