hair highlighted the human side of the value chain. She spoke about women who have worked with her for years without formal training, but whose hand skills give them an income and dignity.

Beauty Mokgwamme of the Mohair Empowerment Trust gave feedback on the trust’ s current empowerment projects at farm level. The trust helps emerging producers to acquire Angora goats. The producer farms with the goats and repays a portion of the mohair income to the trust each year. The largest share of the income remains with the producer to care for the goats and grow the farming enterprise. After five years, once the goats have been paid off, the flock belongs to the producer.

Winners in the spotlight The conference also recognised producers who uphold the standard of South African mohair.
