In his Chairman’ s Report, Chris Hobson, Chairman of Mohair South Africa, described South Africa as the undisputed leader in global mohair production. It set the tone for a conference that looked not only at where the industry stands today, but also at how Cape Mohair can continue to lead through quality, traceability, animal welfare, sustainability and design.
A small industry with major influence
Marco Coetzee, General Manager of Mohair South Africa, placed the industry’ s international position in perspective. Worldwide, around 4.7 million kg of mohair is produced, compared with 6.4 million kg of alpaca, 25 million kg of cashmere, 1.2 billion kg of wool, 24.5 billion kg of cotton and 78 billion kg of polyester.
That is why mohair’ s value lies not in volume alone, but in quality, origin, luxury and the story behind this premium fibre.
