Water wisely as growth returns

Spring watering should be steady and sensible. As the lawn begins growing faster, it needs enough moisture to support new roots and leaf growth. But overwatering can create shallow roots and invite disease.

Rather water deeply and less often than giving the lawn a light sprinkle every day. Deep watering encourages roots to grow down, which helps the lawn cope better when summer heat arrives.

Morning watering is usually best. It gives the lawn moisture for the day ahead and allows the leaves to dry before evening. If you are using rainwater collected during winter, spring is the perfect time to put it to good use.
