Do nutrients matter in a drought: Yes, but only if you choose the right ones. Nutrients still matter in mid summer, yet the type of feeding matters even more than the amount. Avoid high nitrogen surges, because high nitrogen fertilisers drive rapid, lush growth that is soft and very thirsty, so it wilts quickly in heat and can also attract pests and increase disease risk. Potassium, on the other hand, is a true stress management nutrient. It helps regulate water movement within the plant and supports stronger cell structure, which improves tolerance to drought and heat. In mid summer, a balanced feeding programme with good potassium support is often far more effective than chasing quick, bright green growth.

Organic over synthetic when water is limited: In very dry conditions, synthetic fertilisers can concentrate as salts in the soil and irritate roots if there is not enough water to flush them through.
