For about 14 million years – until humans discovered the valuable properties of honey – bees did what bees do in an undisturbed way . They forage during the day to collect nectar produced by flowers to attract pollinators . They return to their hives where they deposit the nectar in honeycombs while their fellow bees fan the liquid to evaporate excess water . The aftermath is that the sugar is condensed and transformed into honey and stored for when times are tough .

However , around 10,000 years ago , humans figured out bees are rather conservative and store way more honey than needed . They also learnt that they can get a steady supply of honey if the hives are properly cared for .
If the beekeeper is worth his salt , about 98 per cent of these eggs will hatch per day . And the new bees start working almost from day one .
