The bulbs are starting to pop up and there is a hint of spring in the air as we move closer to our golf season’ s beginning. Winter seemed to move ahead at a good pace

The chili and chowder fundraising dinner for the Charbonneau Golf Association Student Award was truly a success. Thank you, Tim Bonino, for organizing it and many thanks to the Niners who generously gave both donations and volunteer time. Special thanks to Virginia Horler, the Niners representative. Her enthusiasm for this committee and the work they do is appreciated.
Fun was the name of the game at our January“ Game Day” event. JoAnna Sawyer outdid herself with the activities. The games tested our skills, concentration and our willingness to make ourselves appear very clumsy. Videos were taken so maybe we can have a Charbonneau movie night with the“ Niner Gamers” being the featured comedy act. The Niners were asked to bring donations of golf equipment and brightly colored golf balls to be given to the First Tee of Greater Portland. After seeing the amount we got, I am confident that many garages and closets were cleaned out. The items will be donated in conjunction with the Charbonneau Women’ s Golf Association’ s contribution in March. Bowling came next for another winter

event. League play it wasn’ t and the gutters got their fair share of balls rolling down them. The turnout was very good and, from the cheers and laughter that were heard throughout Langers, you could only imagine what people were thinking about the crazy ladies at the bowling lanes.
The Niner winter events will conclude with a few hours at Top Golf. The cost is only $ 10, so sign up now in the book in the Proshop or online at ladiesninersgolf. com.

Soon after, the 2025 eagerly anticipated golf season begins with our Welcome Back Coffee, April 1. Even though it may be April Fool’ s Day, any trickery will be limited; however you never know what the Niners might do! You can sign up online or in the signup book in the Proshop. You will have the option to golf afterward.
Niners welcome all levels of golfers so think about joining us if you already haven’ t. If you have questions or are curious as to what we are all about email ninersinfo @ gmail. com and a member of our Membership Committee will be in touch with you.

SpringRidge celebrates new centenarians

On the last Friday of January, the SpringRidge community came together to celebrate the birthdays of their two newest centenarians. Jean Scrugham and Jack Guthrie both turned 100.
Jean was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and earned a degree in chemistry at the University of Cincinnati. She was involved in the development of the oral polio vaccine while working with Dr. Albert Sabin. Jean and her late husband met in college and raised three children together. Today she is a proud mother and grandmother. She enjoys staying active, singing in the choir, listening to music, reading, painting and flower arranging.
Jack Guthrie is a native Oregonian, born in Portland. He joined the Army out of high school and served in World War II. He attended college after his service and ultimately graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He returned to Oregon and worked as a civil engineer. Jack and his wife Elsa were married for 61 years and raised three beautiful daughters. Today the family has grown to include four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. These days Jack likes to spend his time golfing, listening to music, playing cribbage and pinochle and visiting with family.
Jean and Jack join two other centenarians at SpringRidge: Gretchen Kramer and Kenny Johnson, both 101. Gretchen is a
