What makes for quality golf course sand?
Chili / Chowder Fundraiser is a huge success
BONINO
A hearty thank you goes out to all who attended the Chili-Chowder fundraising dinner held Jan. 15. The Charbonneau Golf Associations Student Award Committee netted close to $ 1,358 toward the annual contribution fund.
Thank you to Dave Mauk of the Charbonneau Country Club Foundation for a substantial contribution as well as Chris Bensel and the pro shop for their contribution. All three golfing groups( CWGA, Niners and Men’ s Club) are a part of this committee and work together to raise funds to assist our qualified seasonal workers in their quest towards furthering their education and training.
Over 112 Charbonneau residents and friends attended the event this year. We would especially like to thank Allison and Norton’ s Café for catering and helping with this venture. You made this possible for us and the food was delicious. Further, thanks go out to the three groups of volunteers who helped with the logistics, as well as Olivia and Maddy for keeping us happy and hydrated. There were many moving parts for this and we thank you all.
Hope for us all
Does your love of golf burn like the fiery intensity of a urinary tract infection? If so, then March is“ your” month to howl. It’ s also the start of the Charbonneau Men’ s Club outings and seasonal events. The first of March is also the start of score posting in GHIN for all golfers in the Northwest.
Of all the months of the year, I think March is the month of hope. We’ re all hoping the dreary wet and cold weather is behind us; we are hopeful for bountiful sun, warmth and improved golfing weather and are hoping to get spring
and summer here fast. Yes, hope is a good four-letter word.
Thanks for great winter play
While we are thinking about it( actually you weren’ t but are now) hasn’ t this been the best winter golf play ever here in Charbonneau? Kudos to Chris, Andrew and Matt( previously) for having the foresight to make improvements to the course. Top dressing, drainage and other changes have allowed more and better play, and have kept the red course open all year. When you see them, give them a hearty“ thanks” for their efforts. Now if they could just make it rain only during the dark hours.
Love me a new sand bunker
You might have noticed that our sand bunkers are playing much better now that the rain( mentioned previously) has had its effect on the loose sand. You may also have noticed that many people will not take the time to properly manicure these obstacles after traipsing through them, leaving uneven surfaces and often deep footprints to play out of. So, here are a few tips for our beautiful white sand bunkers.
Can I rake a bunker before hitting my shot? Yes, and no. You may rake the bunker any time to care for the course, as long as you do not improve the conditions affecting your upcoming stroke. That would be your lie, area of intended stance and area of intended swing or line of play. Bummer!
To properly rake a sand bunker, follow these steps: Push the sand away from your ball with the rake, then pull it back evenly to smooth out the surface distributing the sand consistently across the bunker. Always rake in the direction of play, moving backwards as you exit the bunker. Yes, you can use both sides of the rake for a smooth surface. Remember, always enter and exit at a low spot if possible.
There’ s sand and then there is golf course sand
I know many of you stay up nights thinking about the types of sand used on a golf course. Lucky for you, I did last night so here is more stuff you never wanted to know or possibly didn’ t care about regarding our sand.
Did you know there is a science
