Celebrating girls and women in sports!

If you are a woman born in the‘ 30s,‘ 40s or‘ 50s and played a sport in high school or college, chances are your experiences as a female in sports are very
BOOK different from the experiences our female student athletes have today. At our February winter luncheon, CWGA celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day which was designated this year on Feb. 5. At the luncheon, we learned some facts, were quizzed on our knowledge about women in sports, and shared our own personal stories and experiences in sports and activities as young women. The changes for girls and women in sports started with Title IX and the recognition of this special day that was set aside to honor girls and women in sports.
At our luncheon, one female athlete we honored was Caitlin Clark. We discussed the changes in girls and women basketball now as it compares to when we were in school. One of our members remembered that she wore bloomers to play basketball, and as a forward could not cross the midcourt line. Did you know that it wasn’ t until 1971 that women were considered robust enough to handle a full-length court? And it wasn’ t until Title IX that there were any golf programs for girls in high schools and colleges. Another female athlete we honored was Nelly Korda, a professional golfer who had opportunity
to develop her golfing skills and realize her potential as a student golfer because of Title IX. She is from the USA and is one of the top three golfers in 2024 on the PGA Tour.
Title IX, a federal law passed by Congress in 1972, prohibits sex discrimination in all educational programs that receive federal dollars. What happened immediately after this law was passed by Congress was an increase in participation of female athletes in sports by adding programs that allowed females to participate and by expanding the variety of sports and activities available to females. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan declared National Girls and Women in Sports Day to acknowledge the important role women play in sports, to raise awareness for and act as a reminder about the positive aspects of sports and the continued need to promote gender equality. This day is meant to honor all female athletes, professional, amateur and aspiring. How many girls and women even know that they are being honored on National Girls and Women in Sports Day? No one can deny the benefits of sports for any child or young adult, but up until 1972 that was mostly reserved for boys and young men. I can only imagine what my golf game might look like had I had an opportunity to play the game of golf on a team in high school or college.
Our third and final winter luncheon also celebrates supporting young people in sports. On March 6 at 11:30 a. m., Steve Marshall, executive director of the Campbell Course— also known as the Children’ s Course— and home of First Tee Oregon will be our guest speaker. Steve will share the mission of First Tee and their efforts to expose children 5 to18 to the joy of golf. First Tee introduces and teaches young girls and boys the skills of
