Mobile Ag Lab Visits Jersey Shore Elementary School
The Mobile Ag Ed Science Lab visited Jersey Shore Area Elementary School for two weeks at the beginning of February . The Mobile Ag Lab is provided through the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation , a charitable organization supported by the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau . Additional support for bringing the Ag Lab to Jersey Shore Area Elementary School was provided by the Jersey Shore Education Foundation .
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade had the opportunity to experience one to two science lessons in the lab during the two-week period . Each lesson is an opportunity for students to learn about agriculture , which is Pennsylvania ’ s number one industry , in a fun and hands-on way . Students visit the lab to perform science experiments that teach lessons based on farm , food , fiber , and the environment . The lab is equipped with all the materials and supplies needed for the experiments .
This year ’ s Mobile Ag Lab lessons were taught by Lou Anne Gasperine , a retired science educator from the Jersey Shore Area School District , who is contracted through the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau . Examples of the experiments that are taught in the lab include : germinating seeds under different conditions , creating crayons from soybeans , making lip balm using soybeans , candling and inspecting eggs , making glue from milk , making butter from cream with varying levels of fats , and testing water samples to rule out contamination .
