Engineering Term of the Month – “ Metallurgy ”
Metallurgy is a domain of materials science / engineering that closely examines and studies the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements , their inter-metallic compounds , and their mixtures , or alloys . Within the civil engineering profession in particular , metallurgy plays a critical role in the design , construction , and maintenance of structures and infrastructure as a whole .
Metals are widely used in construction due to their strength , durability , and malleability and metallurgy helps civil engineers to better understand the properties of these metals , such as their strength , weight , ductility , and corrosion resistance . This knowledge is essential in identifying , or even custom-designing , the appropriate materials for a given application based on the specific project requirements , environmental conditions , susceptibility to vandalism , etc .
One of the primary challenges in civil engineering is to design structures that can withstand extreme external loads , such as wind , earthquakes , flooding , heat , and heavy traffic . Metallurgy provides engineers with the tools required to better predict the behavior of metal structures under varying loads and conditions , as well as the corresponding data to monitor asset performance and improve the design of future steel structures to be stronger , lighter , and more durable in order to best withstand heavy loads and harsh weather conditions while also being mindful of any environmental impacts .
Metallurgy also plays a critical role in the maintenance and repair of steel structures . Over time , metals degrade due to factors such as corrosion , fatigue , and wear . Metallurgical analysis helps engineers to understand the primary causes of degradation and to develop more effective strategies to prevent , or slow down , these processes , as well as efficiently allocate / prioritize maintenance of these assets in the future . For examples , metallurgical analysis is often used to identify the root cause of corrosion in one or more elements of a metal structure , and based on the findings from the analyses , an appropriate coating or treatment can be applied to the steel elements to slow down the progression of further damage and ultimately extend the life of the asset without performing a full restoration or repair .
Metallurgy is a critical disciple within the engineering profession and provides engineers with the knowledge and tools to design , construct , and maintain metal structures and infrastructure that are safe , reliable , and durable , while also encouraging innovation to develop lighter , stronger , lessexpensive , safer , more environmentally-conscious materials . As civil engineers continue to face new challenges , such as climate change and the increasing need for sustainable materials , the importance of metallurgy is likely to grow even further in the coming decades .
