LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear members of SJGCC ,
Another chilly month with a few warm days mixed in has the golf course looking very dormant . We were attempting to keep some color on the short grass areas by using some pigments with limited success . Once the grass reaches this level of dormancy it is difficult to get the brown grass to take on the pigment and look green . At this point in the season , we are going to hold off any other applications until we start to green up .
To aid in said green up process we will be putting out 22 tons of fertilizer in the latter part of the month . For the rough areas we will be utilizing an organic sludge material that has some nitrogen and phosphorous in it . On the tees and fairways , we will use a 10-0-20 fertilizer which will break down quite a bit faster than the sludge and be more readily available to the plant . Both products are slow-release fertilizers that will feed the plant while it breaks dormancy .
Over the next couple of months , we are planning on doing some work around the tee signs on each hole . We are still throwing around ideas on what to do with these areas for a long-term solution that is more manageable and looks nice and clean . We will continue working on small projects around the course this month and look forward to a little warmer weather and greener grass . It ’ s strange but the same thing happens every year- In the fall we can ’ t wait for the grass to stop growing , then when it does , we can ’ t wait for it to start back up again in the spring .
Thanks ,

Mike O ’ Malley
