March 2022 ASCE-NH Newsletter | Page 9

BOARD MEMBER OF THE MONTH Brenton Cole , P . E .

Greetings ASCE members and readers of our monthly newsletter . I am your ASCE clerk and have been in this role for almost two years . I am originally from a small town in Maine and went to college out-of-state at the University of Massachusetts . I met my wife while studying engineering in college and together we moved to New Hampshire after graduation . In 2010 , I started as a project engineer for a small civil site engineering firm and have become fond of the industry , especially the supportive network of engineers in NH . In 2019 , Jeffrey Merritt and I started Granite Engineering , located in downtown Manchester with aspirations of growing to other geographic locations in New England .
Granite Engineering focuses on land development in New England with a majority of our work performed in New Hampshire . We develop long-standing relationships with our clients to help move their projects through construction . We specialize in site plan development , roadway design , subdivision layout , drainage analysis , construction inspections , and land-use permitting . While those are our primary functions , we are well versed in many other aspects of land development . Since Granite ’ s conception , we have continuously added talented engineers ranging in experience and expertise . Granite Engineering provides our employees with a work environment and culture that prioritizes their personal lives by offering unique and flexible work schedules . While different from the industry standard , we feel it is important to accommodate specific circumstances and optimize the balance between work and life .
Starting Granite Engineering has been all-consuming , though I have enjoyed every minute of it . I get to work with a great staff daily , talented sub-consultants that share our same goals , and municipalities that I respect . While I truly love what I do , my family is most important . My wife , Melissa , and 4-year old daughter , Lainey , are my pride and joy . We live in Manchester and try to experience all that the area has to offer . Lainey is growing up too quickly and I don ’ t want to miss a minute . Town meetings tend to keep engineers out late so we have standing breakfast dates to make up the family time . Recently , we also surprised Lainey with a new mini goldendoodle puppy who has been surprisingly well-mannered . We continue to find happiness working , living , and enjoying New Hampshire ’ s communities .
I am happy to serve the Board of Directors of New Hampshire ’ s ASCE section and look for other opportunities to help build relationships in this local industry .
