It's worthwhile to take a moment and discuss the two types
of chess notation formats to which we'll be referring in this
chapter. “PGN” refers to Portable Game Notation, a standard
for recording chess games which was developed on the
Internet in the 1990's. It's called “portable” notation because
it's easy to move (or “port”) games from one chess program
to another, as a PGN format file is nothing more than a text
file in which the information is organized in a rigid, standard
way, so that any program capable of reading a game in PGN
format would be able to access the file, interpret the data, and
display the game. PGN format is also readable by the naked
eye, without the aid of software. Here's a sample game score
in PGN format:
