PART 2 • Your chess quests
Clicking on a quest button loads that particular quest, and you can see the starting position on Chess King ' s board. Let ' s look at the very first( and easiest) quest:

1The white bar above the board tells us which quest you ' re playing. The chess board will show the starting position of the quest, and the pieces displayed outside the board show the advantage you ' ll enjoy – in this case, you ' ll be up a Queen and two Rooks.

2Don ' t forget that the small boxes displayed to the immediate right of the board show which side is to move; the tiny white box just outside the board ' s lower right corner means that it ' s White ' s move. And, should you want to turn the board around( too see it from the other side ' s point of view), click the twin curved arrows near the board ' s lower left corner.

You might notice that there are clocks displayed above the board:
• Games in Quest Mode are timed; the clocks for you and Houdini will run during the game. Don ' t let that worry you; in Quest Mode, you ' re not penalized for letting the clock run down to zero. The clocks are just there for practice.( We ' ll learn more about chess time controls and, specifically, how to set the Chess King clocks in a later chapter.)
