PART 2 • Solving a chess king puzzle set
• The red number in the middle of the display is a countdown
displaying the number of seconds until the next position will be loaded
automatically. If you'd like to change the number of seconds between
puzzles (the “delay”), you can do this by clicking the yellow Menu
button (near the screen's upper left corner) and selecting “Settings”.
You find the controls for setting the delay in the Settings dialogue:
• Two boxes allow you to type in a numerical value corresponding to the
length of the delay you want before the next position is automatically
loaded. Checking “Analyze after task finish” means that Houdini will
start playing moves for both sides after you've given an answer for the
puzzle. This is often interesting in tactical puzzles which don't involve
checkmate – you can see how both sides play the position after a
successful tactical shot. On the other hand, checking this box also
makes it hard to take a second look at a position you solve incorrectly,
since Houdini will immediately play the correct move when you make a
mistake.
While we're on the subject of the Settings dialogue, you will
(by default) see a lot of colored squares, boxes, and other
visual cues on the chess board while you're solving puzzles:
