PART 2 • Solving a chess king puzzle set
3
The control panel displays some commands which are
specific to puzzle solving in Chess King:
• If you select “Pause”, the timer is stopped. But this doesn't give you any
extra time in which to think, because the chess board is also cleared so
that you no longer can see the position.
• You can get a hint from Houdini 4, the built-in “chess playing brain” of
Chess King. Houdini will show you the best move in the position, but
you'll also get no credit for solving the puzzle.
• If you want to skip the puzzle and come back to it later, you can do this
too by clicking “Skip the position”. When you reach the end of the puzzle
group, any puzzles you skipped will be presented to you again in a
random order.
Each time you finish a puzzle, you'll see this box:
• ....which has three components. You can click “Review” to examine
the position at length, if you wish. If you select “Review”, the screen will
be frozen for as long as you care to study the current board position.
This is sometimes helpful when you want to look at the result of a nice
tactical shot. When you review a position in the way, a new command
called “Resume” will appear in Chess King's control panel; clicking it
will return you to the puzzle set where you can continue solving the
challenges.
• Also in this display you can click “Continue” to go immediately to the
next puzzle in the set.
