ABBREVIATIONS AND SYMBOLS
Algebraic notation also uses some additional abbreviations and symbols.
1The letter“ x” is added when a move is a capture; for example,“ Bxf6” means that the Bishop captured the enemy piece or pawn on f6.
2A“ plus” sign(+) after a move indicates that it was a check, while a pound sign after a move(#) means that the move was a checkmate; for example,“ Qh8 +” or“ Rxa8 #”.
3Castling Kingside is recorded as“ O-O”( capital letter O ' s, not the number zero, when typing the moves), while Queenside castling gets recorded with an extra O, like this: O-O-O.
4If a pawn captures en passant, it ' s helpful( though not required) to add the abbreviation“ e. p.” after the move, like this:“ exf6 e. p.”.
5When a pawn promotes, the move is written as a regular pawn move, followed by the“ equal” sign, and the letter abbreviation for the piece to which it promoted, like this:“ b8 = Q”.
It ' s customary to include the game ' s move number before a move. If a move is preceded by an ellipsis( three dots), either before the move(“... Bc5”) or between the move number and the move itself(“ 15... Bc5”) it means that the move was made by Black. If there ' s no ellipsis, the move was made by White(“ 15. Nf4”).
