• Either of the White Knights can move to e6 (and fork the Black King and
Queen!). If one of the Knights makes that move it would be confusing
to just write “Ne6”, since no one replaying the game would know which
Knight went to that square. If the Knight on g5 made the move, it would
be recorded as “Nge6”, while if the other Knight jumped to e6 it would
be written as “Nde6” -- in either case, the starting file of the Knight is
provided for clarification.
• A similar case can happen with Rooks on the same file:
• Either Black Rook can move to c3. If the Rook on c7 makes the move, it
would be written as “R7c3”, while if the Rook on c1 made the move, we
would record it as “R1c3”. In this case the starting rank is included to
make the actual move more clear.
