LEARN THE“ UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE” OF CHESS
The term“ chess notation” refers to a means of recording the moves of chess games so that people can replay them later. There are several different kinds of chess notation, but the one most commonly used nowadays is called algebraic notation. That name makes it sound complicated, but it ' s actually very easy to learn and use. In fact, to make full use of all of Chess King ' s fun training and analysis tools, you really ought to learn how chess notation works.( If you already know how to read and use algebraic notation, you can skip ahead to Chapter 4 if you ' d like.)

• A chess board has sixty-four squares, arranged in eight horizontal rows( called ranks) and eight vertical rows( called files). Each file is identified by a letter, a through h.
