THE CHESS TREE
The lower portion of the notation panel is the Chess Tree. (If
the panel displays a graph, click the “Tree” button to the right
of the graph to display the chess tree.) The tree gets its name
from the fact that it consists of all of the games from Chess
King's GigaKing database (more than 5,000,000 games!)
merged together into a single “tree” through which you can
explore all of the myriad “branches” (chess variations). The
tree provides instant information about the moves played
in any position, based on the games from GigaKing. For
example, after the moves 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 (the French
Defense), the chess tree looks like this:
• We can see at a glance that the move which was most frequently
played here is 3.Nc3, which appears in more than 130,000 games in
GigaKing.
• Note that you can make the tree portion of the notation panel larger or
smaller by “grabbing and dragging” the tree's upper border (clicking
on it with the left mouse button, holding down the button, and dragging
the border up or down). You can also use the scroll bar located at the
right of the tree to scroll the display up and down.
• We'll look at the chess tree in greater detail a bit later on.
