UNT GRADUATE STUDENT HOLDS A HANDS-ON WORKSHOP FOR SUMMIT STUDENTS
In late January, students at Summit High School had a unique opportunity to explore the world of ceramics, thanks to Carla Hughes, a University of North Texas graduate specializing in the art form.
two balls of clay to mold into bowls following Hughes’ step-by-step instructions. It was a truly hands-on experience, allowing students to discover both the joys and challenges of working with clay.
The hands-on workshop introduced students to the intricate process of throwing clay on the wheel under Hughes’ expert guidance.
The workshop was a special collaboration between Summit High School and UNT, supporting the Empty Bowls Project for 2025.
Hughes, who has spent years refining her craft, was thrilled to share her passion and knowledge with the eager students. She brought along ample clay and patiently walked each student through cutting, shaping, and forming their creations.
“ The UNT ceramic workshop was a wonderful experience for my students,” said Amanda McDevitt, art, ceramics, and sculpture teacher at Summit High.“ They were given the opportunity to have a very focused training that has increased their skills.”

Empty Bowls is an international movement that connects artists to raise money for food-related charities, helping feed the hungry in communities around the world.
