SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL BAND AND FOOTBALL MAKE HISTORY
Summit High School ’ s athletics and fine arts programs marked some notable firsts in the 2021-22 school year .
The football team finished the season as back-to-back Region 1 champions . The Jaguars advanced to the playoffs after finishing as district runner-ups .
Philip O ’ Neal , executive director of athletics , remarked that becoming a football state champion is tough , so it is a feat to be able to reach the state semifinals two years in a row .
“ We ’ re all aware of how amazing our student-athletes are , but the other amazing component of this team is the coaching staff , led by Coach Channon Hall ,” said O ’ Neal . “ I would place this coaching staff against any coaching staff in the country in how they both love their team and push their players to be their best .”
The Jaguar Band celebrated major accomplishments as well . For the first time in the school ’ s 19-year history ,
the band advanced to the University Interscholastic League ( UIL ) state contest . The band finished 19th overall .
The group also received international accolades by earning the Sudler Flag of Honor by the John Philip Sousa Foundation . High school programs that receive the award have proven to have a record of outstanding performance at the regional , state and national level .
“ The award is a very high honor and looks at all aspects of a band program ,” said Chris Kanicki , Summit High School band director . “ Congratulations to our many outstanding students and teachers throughout the years that helped bring about this incredible achievement !”
The Summit High School band will celebrate its Sudler Flag achievement in May during its spring concert .
