High School Students Delve Into Post-Grad Options
H
undreds of Mansfield ISD high school students and their parents turned out for the 2016 MISD
College and Career Night.
Legacy High School
freshman Kaiya Stroy
had a productive
conversation with
a Louisiana Tech
representative.
A variety of college, technical school and military representatives were available at the Nov. 2 event to answer
questions about their respective programs and campuses.
“No matter what path these students choose in life, we wanted to give them
the opportunity to explore those options,” said Angela Martin, MISD’s AVID
coordinator. “The representatives here are allowing students to get a closer look
at the schools and eventual careers that are available to them.”
Attendees maneuvered through the
crowds to get more information about
their future.
The day also featured seminars on financial aid for college and details about the
ACT and SAT college entrance exams.
Dozens Turn Out for MISD’s District of Innovation Institute
M
ore than 150 school administrators and board members from all across Texas signed up to attend Mansfield ISD’s
District of Innovation Institute on Nov. 7.
MISD completed the process of becoming a District of Innovation (DOI) in the summer of 2016 and helped other
districts do the same through the one-day institute. Texas school districts considering the designation, or those who
have already achieved it but need help maximizing its potential, were encouraged to attend.
A District of Innovation is a concept passed
by the 84th Legislative Session in House
Bill 1842, effective immediately, that gives
traditional independent school districts most
of the flexibilities available to Texas’ open
enrollment charter schools.
MISD now has the flexibility to hire teachers
for technical courses who have industry
experience but may not have teacher
certification. The district also opted out
of uniform school calendar, which gives
flexibility pertaining to the first and last day
of school.
The institute included keynote speakers, expert panels and
informational workshops.
