MUSICIANS WIN STATE AND NATIONAL MUSICAL HONORS
The All-State band and choir students go through several rounds of auditions to achieve that title .
Twenty-two Mansfield ISD fine arts students have earned a distinction given to the top high school musicians in the state .
Twelve MISD band students and 10 choir students were named All-State musicians by the Texas Music Educators Association ( TMEA ). According to TMEA , it is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive .
The young musicians undergo multiple rounds of auditions to achieve the designation .
Each fall , over 70,000 high school students across the state audition in their TMEA region . A select group of students advance to compete against musicians from other regions in the area competition .
The highest-ranking musicians in the area contest , usually less than 2,000 students total , then qualify to perform in one of 18 Texas All-State ensembles in band , orchestra or vocal divisions .
This year ’ s annual TMEA Clinic / Convention was held virtually Feb . 11-13 .

On the national level , a Mansfield ISD fine arts student has once again been selected by Carnegie Hall as one of the top young musicians in the country .
Dillon Akerman , a senior at Lake Ridge High School , is one of the 97 students chosen to play in the 2021 National Youth Orchestra of the United States ( NYO- USA ). He was also selected last year .
The orchestra , comprised of musicians ages 16-19 from several states , will gather in July at Purchase College , State University of New York ( SUNY ) for a month-long residency that will include mentorship , classes and performances .
