Timberview HS Boys Basketball Team Wins State Championship Title The team made history by defeating San Antonio Wagner 77-64 The starting five proudly show off their UIL 5A State Championship medals. SAN ANTONIO | The Timber- view High School boys basketball team made history by defeating San Antonio Wagner 77-64, claim- ing the school’s second state boys basketball championship in just three years. The UIL Boys Basket- ball State Tournament was held March 7-9 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. “Defend, run, repeat” was the team’s motto this season, a motto that led them to dominate the championship game and capture the state title. “They came out like a ball of fire,” Timberview coach Duane Gregory said. “They shared the ball so well.” MVP and senior CJ Smith will attend Western Texas College in the fall. 8 | Mansfield ISD TODAY Ball of fire is a spot on descrip- tion. At the end of the first quarter, Timberview led Wagner 29-10. Located only 11 miles from the Ala- modome, Wagner definitely had a hometown crowd advantage, but Timberview didn’t let that slow them down. Senior guard CJ Smith led all scorers with 24 points and was named state-title game MVP. “I never thought I would see this my senior season and win MVP of the game,” said Smith. “It’s an amazing feeling.” After a vigorous third quarter, the Wolves started the fourth with a slim lead of 58-54, but went on Timberview’s boys basketball team is ranked number 15 in the nation. a 19-4 run leading them to their 77-64 win. “I told them to keep their com- posure. I asked them where their fire was and to settle down. Just get stops on defense and the of- fense will take care of itself,” Grego- ry said. “I told them Wagner would have a huge following and that there would be fans that just come every year to watch the games. Just play Timberview basketball and you’ll win every single one of them over and that’s what they did.” Timberview extended their winning streak to 19 games to take the state title and finished the sea- son with a record of 38-2. The team went undefeated in district play and held a 19 week winning streak.
