MISD Associate Superintendent Earns
Tasbo Top Financial Award
MISD | MISD Associate Superintendent of
Business and Finance, Dr. Karen Wiesman, was
awarded the Texas Association of School Business
Official’s (TASBO) Commitment to Excellence
Award at the association’s annual conference last
month.
This is the highest individual honor in school
business. It is awarded to the member who best
distinguishes themselves within their profession,
their district, and the Texas Association of School
Business Officials.
“Dr. Wiesman is an exemplary example
of everything MISD stands for,” said MISD
Superintendent Dr. Jim Vaszauskas. “She is a
community volunteer, a strong leader, and her
contributions to MISD are invaluable. Many
people think of business and finance as dealing
specifically with tax dollars, but what Dr. Wiesman
does every day has a huge impact on student
achievement.”
Under Dr. Wiesman’s leadership, Mansfield ISD
has also been lauded for its excellence in financial
accountability and reporting. These recognitions
have included the district earning a Superior
rating in the School Financial Integrity Rating
System of Texas (FIRST) for 16 consecutive years
and the Certificate of Achievement of Excellence in
Financial Reporting from the Government Finance
Officers Association of the United States and
Canada for five consecutive years.
“MISD has long been known for fiscal
responsibility, and that is thanks to Dr. Wiesman’s
leadership,” said MISD School Board President
Karen Marcucci. “She is an asset to our district and
our community and I can think of no one more
deserving of this award.”
Dr. Wiesman joined MISD in November 2012
as the Controller and was promoted to Associate
Superintendent of Business and Finance in
July 2013. She earned her Bachelor of Business
Administration from Texas A&I University, her
Master of Arts from Texas A&M University –
Kingsville, and her Doctorate in Educational
Leadership from Texas A&M University – Kingsville.
Dr. Wiesman is also a Certified Public Accountant
and has been an active leader in the Texas
Association of School Business Officials, including
chairing several committees and serving as the
association’s president in 2015-16.
