Four MISD Students Named National Merit Scholarship Finalists A ll four Mansfield ISD students who were selected as National Merit Semifinalists have made it to the next round. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. High school students are selected into the program based on their top scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Eric Li, Mark Sterling and Austin Whitt from Mansfield High School, along with Daniel Erickson from Summit High School are four of approximately 15,000 finalists. The program begins with 1.6 million entrants with the highest PSAT/NMSQT scores. The list then whittles down throughout the school year to name Commended Students, Semifinalists and Finalists. The finalists continue in the competition with the opportunity to earn thousands of dollars in scholarships that will be offered in the spring. Erickson, Li, Sterling and Whitt are in the less than 1 percent of seniors in the nation to be recognized. The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded in 1955 to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth. Winners are chosen based on their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Mansfield School & Family 5
