On the occasion of St. Lucia's 35th Independence Anniversary, a statue of Sir John was erected in Constitution Park. There is also a highway named after him– the John Compton highway located in the north of the island. And a dam – the John Compton Dam located in Millet, Anse La Raye.   Sir John started negotiating for independence in 1974.
