On the occasion of St.
Lucia's 35th
Independence
Anniversary, a
statue of Sir John was
erected in
Constitution Park.
There is also a
highway named
after him– the
John Compton
highway located in
the north of the
island.
And a dam – the John
Compton Dam
located in Millet,
Anse La Raye.
Sir John started
negotiating
for independence in
1974.
His views were
conservative.
He had the innate
tendency to support
the working class and
look out for their
needs. Hence he
overwhelmingly garn
ered the support of
the 'common' people.
