Binge Drinking

Many people’s families, careers, and lives have fallen apart due to excessive drinking. People that don’t know their limits when it comes to drinking are at serious risk. If you drink 4 or 5 (depending on your gender) drinks in less than 2 hours, you are ‘Binge Drinking’. Binge drinking is a serious and common practice in society today. Around one in six adults in the US binge drinks about four times a month. This is not good because binge drinking is dangerous. It has many long term and short term effects. You could not only harm yourself but also others around you. Some of the short term effects caused by binge drinking are impaired judgment, unintentional injuries (to yourself and others), intentional injuries (to yourself and others), hangovers, nausea, shakiness, vomiting, and alcohol poisoning. Some of the long term effects are physical and psychological dependence on alcohol, damage to the brain and liver, risk of cancer of the mouth, throat or esophagus, STD’s, unplanned pregnancy, children born with FASD, risk of heart problems, neurological disorders, and poor control of diabetes. It does not only affect your physical and mental health but also affects your social life and the lives of everyone around you. While binge drinking you could make bad decisions and also act violently thus endanger the people around you (E.g drunk driving). You will probably fail in studies and work achieving poor results due to binge drinking. Many people don’t act the same after drinking and many friends drift away due to this. You could lose your friends, family and social status due to binge drinking. Some people drink due to stress, others due to peer pressure and most people just feel bored or curious. If anyone thinks they can drown stress by having alcohol, or crumble to peer pressure or curiosity, ask yourself, ‘is it really worth it?’
