The National Grid’s London Power tunnels open with
the second phase of
scheme beginning
TransPennine Express doubles Liverpool-Manchester services
he project was officially opened by HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. The
Seven year project included a new tunnel in order to serve the capitals north and west customers. The addition of 200kn electricity cables running through 32km of tunnels is the most significant improvement to the capitals electricity systems since the 60s. The
next phase will see new cable tunnels between Hurst to New Cross and New Cross to Wimbledon. A public event will be held this summer and outline further details of the potential of a new tunnel between Hurst and Crayford. The project is expected to take eight years to complete with work starting in next year’s summer.
Liverpool-Manchester
services will double according
to TransPennine Express (TPE) this
May. Currently the half hour journey runs
hourly in both directors however from May the
journeys will run every half hour and will also there
will also be an introduction of two fast services between
Manchester and Newcastle.
As part of the billion pound Great North Rail project this time table change is one of the biggest the North has ever seen according to TPE. Later this year TPE also said it will be introducing its new Nova trains as part of a half a billion pound investment.
