Designer: Brenda Carver I The line forms here have this weird way of remembering people who went to Manchester when I did. Mention some names and, if I remember them, I picture them standing in the lunch line in the old Union cafeteria (maybe someone in the Psychology Department can tell me why this is my default memory). So when I was asked last spring if I wanted to interview Bev Ott ’80 during a campus visit, I said sure. And then I pictured her, circa 1978, standing in line in the Union. What I didn’t picture back then for Bev and others in that line was the incredible impact they would have on the world. The people they would feed. The surgeries they would perform. The children they would teach. The hope they would deliver. The lives they would change. I remember them waiting for Tater Tots. Who knew? Yes, I could picture Bev. But when I talked to her last spring, I was blown away by the selflessness of her life’s work. I am humbled to think how much less I’ve done, and at the same time incredibly proud that she is a Manchester graduate. In this issue, I invite you to read about the work that Bev and her husband, Olivier, are doing with microloans and other development projects in West Africa (Page 24). And don’t miss my colleague Ben Smith’s piece on Jordan Redding ’13 (Page 30). An athletic trainer at MU, Jordan spent last summer on a bicycle traveling cross country and building houses with Bike and Build. The ways that we choose to improve the human condition are as individual as we are. I hope that you recognize those stories every time you pick up Manchester magazine or click on one of our e-newsletters. It is my privilege to write about Manchester people both proud and humble who make a difference in the world. Together, they form quite a line.
