In Memoriam
Doris Stephenson,
librarian emerita
Doris Airgood ’71 Stephenson, 67,
who retired from Manchester University
in 2014, died Nov. 2, 2016. Doris earned
a bachelor’s degree in history from
Manchester and earned two advanced
degrees from Ball State University – a
master of library science in 1976 and
a master’s in communications in 1992. She worked for 38 years in
Funderburg Library, retiring as the technology and science librarian.
Doris cared deeply about the library and the students, faculty and
staff she served. She was instrumental in bringing the library into the
Carl Strike of North Manchester,
Dec. 20, 2016. Carl worked at Manchester
University for 23 years, retiring in
2014. He is fondly remembered as the
groundskeeper who waved to everyone
from his riding mower.

Class Notes
1960s
M. Jeffrey Ott ’68 and Donna Buckingham ’67 Ott of
South Whitley, Ind., celebrated their 50th anniversary on Dec. 18. They
met as students at Manchester.
1970s Elizabeth Marshall ’70 of Coldwater, Mich., retired after
computer age, led the automation of the library catalog and oversaw
the interlibrary loan service and library instruction outreach. “She was a
true pioneer,” said Jill Lichtsinn, library director.
Her colleagues remember Doris as a mentor, role model and good
friend.
Doris was past president of the American Library Association and a
member of the North Manchester United Methodist Church. Survivors
include her husband, David Stephenson ’72, and their son, Scott
Stephenson.
Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Battle Creek, Mich., where she
teaches a poetry class for veteran patients in treatment for post-
traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, traumatic brain injury
and other injuries.
Mary Herbster ’71 Haupert retired as president and chief
executive officer of the Neighborhood Health Clinics Inc., in Fort
Wayne, Ind., which she led for 21 years. Mary serves on MU’s Board
of Trustees.
Diane Hippensteel ’75x Bever of Forest, Ind., was awarded the
Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indiana Library Federation.
She is a librarian at Indiana University Kokomo.
Michael DeBord ’78 has been named the offensive coordinator of
the Indiana University football team, a position he had previously
at the University of Tennessee. A native of Muncie, Ind., he was a
four-year offensive line starter as a student-athlete for the Spartans.
