During her research phase, the wife was careful to visualize the functionality of a space, not just its aesthetic appeal. She saw glossy photo spreads of beautiful prep spaces with luxurious sinks and magnificent ovens—“ but the refrigerator is across the way somewhere.”
The optimal layout would create a“ golden triangle” of movement from refrigerator to sink to stove. With the plans drawn up, the relatively inexperienced homeowners still wondered if the concept would function. Adam recommended a mockup of the finished product. For a nominal investment of time and resources, the client can see and touch the outlines of their future kitchen.

“ Before they order all these expensive materials, a mockup allows clients to be fully immersed in the space,” Adam explained.“ Approving a design is a big step, and we want clients to be completely comfortable with their decisions. Something always changes after a mockup, and the kitchen is always improved.”
The Kitchens of Vermont team constructed the mockup and invited the wife( right-handed) and her husband( a leftie) to act out various cooking scenarios. Having been married for decades, they’ d already become accustomed to the risks of wielding knives in close quarters with different dominant hands, but the physical mockup gave them a true sense of the space. Based on that early trial they increased the distance between the stove and island by 1.5 inches, a seemingly trivial amount that made a meaningful difference. Similarly, experiencing the real-world flow of traffic allowed the peninsula to widen by nine inches, alleviating previous worries that stools and spectators on the peninsula’ s far side could block access to the primary suite.
“ The 3D mockup was superb, and absolutely worth doing,” the wife said.“ I wasn’ t sure the footprint allowed room for people to comfortably sit, stand, cook, walk, and share the space together.”

Let There Be Lots of Light
Because the kitchen is located at the heart of the building, far from windows, lighting would be critical to keeping a team of family members safe and productive. Jen and Adam knew their clients wanted as much lighting in the kitchen as possible. The high ceiling had previously harbored a kind of shadowy gloom. The glass pocket door allowed a splash of natural light from the mudroom, but the space needed more light.
