His wife liked the idea of green cabinets with glass uppers to take advantage of the 12-foot ceiling and was interested in mixing wood and painted cabinetry. He was partial to black leathered granite surfaces and a large prep island with storage and shelves for cookbooks. Both wanted a large hood over the oven. The Cyrs assured them these elements could coexist beautifully.
“ Adam and Jen really helped us to put notions together and make it real,” they observed.
Adam and Jen suggested the new kitchen could include spalted maple floating shelves to complement the maple floors, which had been milled from trees on the property where the barn was reassembled. Walnut cabinets would draw out the dark tones of the aged structural timbers.
Thanks to its in-house woodshop, Kitchens of Vermont is also able to fabricate custom countertops, shelves, tables and other furniture from slabs of locally sourced wood. This unique capability gives clients broad access to creative designs.

Proof of Concept
The homeowners expect to do plenty of entertaining, and meal preparation tends to be a group effort. Ideally, the kitchen would allow for six or eight adults to comfortably contribute, and for the grandchildren to hang out and participate.
