MANAGEMENT OF NORM IN THE PETROLEUM INDUSTRY Akpojevwa Tega Naomi, october 2016 | Page 7
ABSTRACT
Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) waste in oil and gas
extraction and processing, tends to accumulate at concentration above normal
in by-product waste streams. In the past, the presence of elevated NORM
concentrations has been largely unregulated. These radioactive NORM waste
are hazardous to the environment and to human health above a particular dose
rate of exposure at about 1mSv (1millisierviet) per annum and should therefore
be managed by regulatory framework put in place at both national and
international level. In this regard, many countries including Nigeria has
responded in the same manner. It is necessary that there is a need for adequate
surveillance in oil and gas producing sector of the Nigeria economy, for NORM
waste detection and proper management.
