On Revisionism

The traditional meaning of diaspora refers to a population that has been dispersed beyond their geographical origins through forced displacement caused by conquest, persecution, enslavement, famine or war.
These people however continue to identify ethnically, culturally, politically, religiously and emotionally with a particular homeland they intend to return to as it is their ancestral home while still residing elsewhere.
The term was first used to refer to the Jewish Diaspora dating back to their Babylonian captivity where they held onto the hope of eventually returning to a‘ promised homeland’ which they claimed they had a covenant with their god to such effect.
The amazing claim that there was a god that had issued a title deed directing them to lay claim to a land of milk and honey has been the basis of a global commotion over many centuries and is still unresolved today.
This contrasts dramatically with the African Diaspora, also caused by enslavement especially into the Americas, the African people so dispersed did not come from a single people but from multiple African nations.
The slaves did not have ethnic or cultural ties, they especially did not have a religious or emotional tie to a particular area as most were victims of bounty hunters or political exiles from domestic skirmishes. All they had in common was that they were black.
They did not have a common language or a deity to revere and as they had been shipped across a vast ocean, they had no idea of how to even imagine a journey back home to the safety of their compatriots who they were snatched from.
The word diaspora has now a modern meaning that encompasses people who have moved en masse to other geographical areas but their voluntary migration was and is still spurred by trade, commerce, labor movement or education.
America is a country that was created by diaspora in the truest traditional and modern meaning. America is a country of migrants but after two and half centuries America is deciding that some migrants are more equal than others.
The Americans claim that the country is infested with criminals and murderers who are targeting real Americans and as can be imagined the trumped-up issues are being amplified by Trump to push his immigration agenda of mass deportation.
It is interesting that America has always had serious criminal and murderous groups that were not targeted as immigrants. The marauding wild west cowboys who decimated the indigenous population have been elevated to heroes of popular folklore.
The infamous Mafia, led by mainly Italian criminals but highly infiltrated by the Irish community terrorized and controlled major cities in America and were a national threat as they, at one time, actually run parallel governments.
One of their enduring legacies is the building of complex and impenetrable drug cartels that are a still a thorn in American society but they were not singled out for deportation but South Americans are a target
The Ku Klux Klan, the white supremacists and far right hate groups that was created after the civil war to terrorize and assassinate freed slaves and with aview of re-establishing white supremacy in the south by infiltrating political parties.
