Yet this archaic and basically dysfunctional institution seems to hold the blueprint of the grandeur and privilege that many African leaders aspire to and a majority of them are hellbent on replicating such dynasties ironically using democracy .
Many African leaders would give their right hand to be able to elect by preselection at birth . Since the son or daughter of a monarch is born a ‘ leader ’ irrespective of his competence and debauchery , why not in Africa .
Britain is hardly in a position to lecture any country about its political system . If the British are happy to prod on with their centuries ’ old system that seems to defy logic but has survived , how can they frown on Africans wanting to set up dynasties .
In fact , the whole British system is a collection of dukes , lords , earls , barons and a myriad other titles that were created by the then robber barons who then legitimized their claims of theft by military might . A system they successfully exported globally .
In any place they landed they created the strict class system that gave rise to untold sufferings among millions . Fortunately , a belated sense of guilt saw them attempt to dismantle the horrors they had created .

Of course , the footage on the many ‘ Not My King ’ protests that were held across the dominion to coincide with the coronation were not extensively aired but a disquiet is slowly creeping in questioning the legitimacy of the monarchy .

The hope is also that no African leader is tempted to replicate that level of decadent opulence at the taxpayers ’ expense . It is supremely wise to learn from the mistakes of others but unforgivably foolish to repeat the mistakes of others . History is watching !
