On Democratic Miscalculations
If a person had gone into hibernation in the seventies and reemerged now, that person would perhaps feel the need to check into an institution for a mental wellness check since the world confronting him would seem totally upended.
He would have gone to sleep when the hope of the world was democracy and during his sleep the Berlin wall would have fallen and the Soviet Union would have collapsed and democratically elected regimes would have dotted the whole world.
He would be waking up into a world where democracy would seem to be in full recession, the Arab spring would have stagnated and the democratic gains in South America and Sub-Saharan Africa would be under authoritarian assault.
He would surely be confused by an American president calling the democratic party in America‘ communists’ meaning undesirable while rolling out the red carpet for his bosom buddies who are leaders of communist enclaves of China, Russia and North Korea.
He would be puzzled as to why that same president has declared a verbal and economic war on his traditional allies in Canada and Europe and has gone as far as threatening a new wave of American imperialism aimed at bullying the world.
He would especially wonder why that president was engaged in a domestically ruinous war with Iran which is destabilizing the Middle East, supporting a genocidal regime in Israel and tolerating a blatant attack on democracy in Ukraine.
He would wonder about what happened to Pax Americana while he was asleep as he would be waking up to a belligerent and aggressive America whose president is destroying American institutions and renaming the world on an egomaniac whim.
Countries that proclaim to be democratic should be very concerned and nervous since an insidious morphing has taken root in the democratic ideals and those who pride themselves as living in democratic freedom are living in a dangerous self-deception.
Democracy is pinned on two very crucial pillars, the first being that the will of the majority is paramount and this is achieved by conducting regular free and fair elections to ensure that the will of the people is never compromised.
The other pillar is the doctrine of liberalism which specifies that the people be subjected to the rule of law as defined by the constitution, having a free press to guarantee access to the truth and ensure that all civil rights are protected.
