Marketing
For decades, marketers focused on reach. Today, the focus has shifted towards relationships. Consumers no longer want to be marketed to- they want to belong. The era of polished brand messaging is giving way to authentic conversations driven by creators, employees, customers and communities. User-generated content consistently outperforms traditional advertising because people trust people more than they trust brands.

What My First Cannes Lions Taught Me
Standing on the Croisette, surrounded by thousands of marketers, creatives, technologists and business leaders from around the world, I paused for a moment to take it all in. It was my first time attending the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, and the feeling was difficult to describe.
Growing up in a small village in Kenya, I could never have imagined that one day I would be walking the same streets where the world ' s biggest brands unveil their boldest ideas, where global CMOs debate the future of marketing, and where creativity, technology and business converge to shape our industry.
For many people, Cannes is synonymous with awards, celebrity appearances and glamorous events. While those certainly exist, they are only a small part of the experience.
For me, Cannes was something far more valuable. It was a classroom. Every keynote challenged my thinking. Every conversation broadened my perspective. Every interaction reinforced one undeniable truth: marketing is no longer evolving incrementally- it is being fundamentally reinvented.
Yet one experience stayed with me long after the festival ended. At the Canva Creative Cabana, surrounded by marketers, creators and innovators from around the world, one message echoed throughout the discussions: Technology may be transforming how we create, but creativity remains the greatest driver of business impact.
As someone who works every day at the intersection of AI and programmatic advertising, it was reassuring to hear global leaders reinforce a belief I have long held: technology is most powerful when it enhances human creativity- not when it
attempts to replace it.
That simple idea perfectly captured the spirit of Cannes 2026. Artificial Intelligence was everywhere. Automation was everywhere. Data was everywhere. Yet the brands creating the greatest commercial success were still those using creativity to solve business problems, build emotional connections and inspire action.
As I walked away from that session, one question stayed with me: What do these conversations mean for Africa? Not five years from now. Today.
Because while the discussions were global, the opportunities are incredibly relevant for our continent. Africa has one of the youngest populations in the world, rapidly growing digital economies and consumers who are increasingly mobile-first. Our creator economy is flourishing, businesses are embracing digital transformation, and innovation is accelerating across every industry. Africa is no longer catching up. We are helping shape what comes next.
I left Cannes inspired- not by the glamour, but by the possibilities. More importantly, I left convinced that African marketers have a unique opportunity to lead, provided we embrace innovation while remaining rooted in the realities of our markets. Here-under are five shifts that I believe will define the future of marketing in Africa.
AI Is Becoming Marketing ' s New Operating System
If there was one topic that dominated Cannes, it was Artificial Intelligence. Unlike previous years, AI was no longer discussed as the future- it has become the present. From media planning and audience intelligence to creative development, campaign optimization and measurement, AI was embedded into almost every discussion.
What struck me most was the shift in mindset. The question is no longer " Should we adopt AI?" It has become " How do we use AI responsibly to create better business outcomes?" The brands leading this transformation are not replacing marketers with AI- they are empowering marketers with AI.
Creative teams are producing ideas faster. Media planners are making smarter decisions through predictive intelligence. Campaigns are becoming increasingly
