two complementary frameworks. INFOAI™ describes information behaviors how people work with information, data, and AI. REAL ™ describes leadership readiness and how those behaviors become leadership when decisions actually matter. Together, they form what she calls Digital Decision Fluency™: the human capability required to govern AI responsibly.
The Six Gears of INFOAI™, Applied to Marketing
Inquiry: Asking disciplined questions to surface gaps and define what matters. In marketing: not accepting an AI-suggested audience segment at face value, but asking what data trained it and what it might be missing.
Navigation: Turning complexity into structured paths and workable plans. In marketing: turning a flood of AI-generated content options into an actual campaign plan, rather than freezing in the face of infinite variations.
Oversight: Ensuring trust, accuracy, and responsibility. In marketing: the human Q & A step before AI-generated copy or imagery ships under the brand ' s name.
Framing: Defining the problem, clarifying assumptions, and aligning people. In marketing: deciding upfront whether a campaign is optimizing for engagement, qualified leads, or revenue, before briefing the AI tool not after.
Articulation: Translating insight into meaning, decisions, and action. In marketing: turning an AI-generated audience insight into language a CMO, client, or board can actually act on.
Integration: Embedding systems and insights into routines for sustained results. In marketing: making AI-assisted workflows part of daily practice rather than a one-off pilot that quietly disappears.
The Four Domains of REAL™, Applied to Marketing
Reflect: Applies judgment, considers implications, evaluates long-term impact. In marketing: pausing before a fully AI-automated campaign goes live, rather than shipping the first output.
Engage: Activates movement, mobilizes others, advances execution. In marketing: getting a team to actually act on an AI-surfaced insight instead of admiring it on a dashboard.
Articulate: Communicates meaning, clarifies direction, builds shared understanding. In
73 MAL73 / 26 ISSUE marketing: aligning creative, media, and data teams around what the AI found and what to do about it.
Lead: Defines boundaries, accepts accountability, makes final decisions. In marketing: owning the outcome of an AI-influenced campaign good or bad rather than deferring responsibility to " the algorithm."
Where This Meets the Messy Middle
This research gives empirical weight to an argument we made in our previous piece on transition coaching for marketers: that the AI shift is fundamentally a human transition, not a technology rollout.
Reflect and Engage are, in practice, what it takes to operate inside the Messy Middle the stage where marketers experiment, stumble, and learn, often without a settled playbook. Reflect is the judgment to sit with ambiguity rather than force a premature answer. Engage is the discipline to keep moving despite that ambiguity, rather than letting analysis paralysis stall the work.
Lead is New Beginnings in a single word. It is the capability marketers need once they ' ve moved through the mess, the willingness to set boundaries, take ownership, and make the call, rather than hiding behind a model ' s output. Alikhachkina ' s research doesn ' t just describe what good AI-era leadership looks like; it shows, across 40 + organizations, that this is a learnable, measurable set of behaviors rather than an innate trait some leaders have and others don ' t.
What This Means for Marketing Leaders
One of the more practical outputs of Alikhachkina ' s research is what she calls a Digital Decision Signature, a profile of how an individual leader works with information and how that shows up in real decisions. Applied to a marketing team, the same method produces a heatmap: where the team is strong( core), reliable( supporting), or under strain( friction) across the ten INFOAI and REAL behaviors.
That reframes what " AI readiness training " should actually mean for a marketing organization. The relevant question isn ' t who knows how to prompt a large language model. It ' s who can ask good questions before trusting an output, who can hold ambiguity without stalling the team, and who is willing to take ownership when an AI-influenced decision doesn ' t land.“ The goal isn ' t better AI. It ' s better human decisions with AI.”
For decision-makers, the implication is direct: an AI governance framework that only covers the algorithm is an incomplete one. The technical safeguards data quality, bias review, compliance remain necessary. But without a parallel investment in how marketers themselves ask questions, interpret outputs, and take accountability, the governance framework is protecting the tool while leaving the humans who operate it undertrained for the judgment calls that actually determine outcomes.
For marketing teams, the takeaway echoes what we ' ve said before, now with research behind it: you are not behind because you haven ' t mastered every new tool. You are in transition and the specific capabilities that transition demands have now been named, studied, and shown to be developable across industries as different as healthcare and financial services. The organizations that build Digital Decision Fluency into how their marketing teams work won ' t just adopt AI faster. They ' ll make better decisions with it.
