MARKETING EVOLUTION
WHEN DEPRESSED …
By Marion Wakahe
A
merican theorist,
Harold Koontz I like
to think that I’m quite
intelligent. Though not a master
in a majority of disciplines, I’ve
always felt that I had at least
some knowledge. However after
reading through material on how
the brain works and grasping
only about 1%, I’ve changed
my mind. There’s too much
knowledge out there and I don’t
know much and so probably I’m
not that intelligent after all!
I took an interest in the subject
of how brains work, more
specifically how my brain works
after facing a personal difficulty.
This personal difficulty drove
me into deep despair and it’s at
that point I thought I might have
been depressed though I wasn’t
clinically diagnosed.
I’m out of that particular storm;
the darkness is now lifting. Life
being life however, I know that
another pain could be on the
way. That ’s just how life is; we
face debilitating diseases, we lose
loved ones, we fail in school and
at work, we make mistakes, and
relationships flounder.
What I hope to do for the next
round of pain is manage my
emotions and my mental health
more intelligently so that at
least I don’t find myself in a
place of complete paralysis. As I
faced the pain I went through I

had the hardest time doing the
most menial tasks, things that
essentially took me minutes to do
turned into hours.
So, as I mentioned I started to
do some research on mental and
emotional health and hallo to
words and terms that I hope I’ll
spell correctly. The amygdala, the
thalamus, the hippocampus, and
the cerebral cortex are the parts
of the brain most affected by
depression.
In addition, there are
neurotransmitters such as
acetylcholine, serotonin,
norepinephrine and others
also believed to play a role in
depression. That’s not even the
tip of the iceberg.
Trying to understand aspects
of mental and emotional health
seems a herculean task but I
won’t give up so easy. I choose to
believe I’ll get better as the days
go by.
This subject being at my mind’s
fore has put me in a position to
note it and related subjects when
