As the spring season winds down and the summer months heat up, Harris County Extension programming will continue to touch the lives of the community we serve. Some of our key educational efforts this spring were surrounded by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR). Several local youth excelled amongst statewide competition. Our Senior Horse Judging team (Melodic Freeman, Stephen Freeman, Alexia Husmann, and Peyton Woods) placed 10th, the Senior Agroboticis team from East Early 4-H Club (Isaac Brigham, Johnny Gutierrez, Omar Castro, Ruben Marroquin) placed 1st, and the Jr. Shooting Sports contestants (Mikaela Saenz and Angelina Garza) placed 3rd and 4th respectively. We would also like to congratulate Macy Bennett, Alayna Matheny, and Brice Gilpin for their success as Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Calf Scramble participants.
This summer our educational programming will emphasize healthy initiatives such as Walk Across Texas and Heart Health (see the story inside). It is a good time to remind Harris County residents to get their soil tested for landscaping and gardening purposes as well as to be mindful of our lawn and garden watering. Oftentimes, we tend to water our plants even when they don’t need it. If you are looking for good watering principles, be sure to call our office at 713-274-0950.
Texans turn to Extension for solutions. Extension agents and specialists respond, not only with answers, but also with resources and services that result in a significant return on investment to boost the Texas economy. The agency custom-designs its programs to make a difference in each Texas community.
