composition pays homage to the Count Basie Orchestra with it’ s classic harmonies and understated swing feel.
And Then There Were Three was written in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Maine Music Educators Association. It is dedicated to the recent passing of three iconic Maine jazz figures, Don Doane, Don Stratton and Steve Grover. Each of these three men were influential to literally thousands of young Maine musicians over their career, inspiring many modern day teachers who continue their legacy. Mr. Doane toured with both Maynard Ferguson and Woody Herman, having graduated in 1949 from the same high school I currently teach- South Portland High School. Don Stratton was the trumpet instructor and composer in residence at the University of Maine and the man most responsible for my love of writing. Steve Grover was the youngest and most modern of the trio. As a drummer, the afro cuban groove of the piece is his influence, as is the non- standard harmony. Solo voices are represented by both trombone and trumpet, the respective instruments of Mr. Doane and Mr. Stratton.- Craig Skeffington
All other commissioned works are complete and will soon be in the hands of the All State Students. We are very excited to hear these compositions premiered in May. I know you will be touched by the connections to our great state that these composers have woven through their musical compositions.
