University of Maine Welcomes New Music
Education Faculty Member
The School of Performing Arts at the University of Maine is very pleased to
welcome new faculty member, Dr. Philip Edelman, who will be working in the
area of Music Education. Phil recently completed a Ph.D. in Music Education
and Teacher Education/Curriculum Studies from the University of MissouriKansas City, and was this year’s recipient of the Muriel McBrien Kauffman
Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award. During his time at UMKC, he taught
courses in music education methods and music technology, and supervised
student teachers. He also served as the conductor of the Roeland Park New
Horizons Band, which is comprised of members over age fifty. Phil’s
research interests include lifelong music learning, the music student teaching
experience, and undergraduate music education preparation. Prior to his
doctoral studies, Phil directed the band, orchestra, jazz band and marching
band in the Goddard, Kansas school district for seven years. He received the
BME degree from the University of New Hampshire, and the MM in Music
Education/Instrumental Conducting from Kansas State University. If you

Music Festival/MMEA In-service conference, you will undoubtedly cross paths
with him soon!
