Cooperation In Defense
D
ITTIES , RHYMES , acronyms and adages help us through the maze while learning this wild and wonderful game . These are all designed to help partners cooperate in defense . They sometimes seem like rules that must be followed . But , in fact , they must be applied sensibly and a good defender realizes when to break them . In the last chapter , we explored ideas about third hand play , and saw that “ Third Hand High ” doesn ’ t begin to cover what ’ s involved in cooperating with your partner to defend accurately .
In this chapter , let ’ s take some time to see how ideas such as “ Third Hand High ”, “ Second Hand Low ”, and “ Return Partner ’ s Lead ” work in defending actual hands , starting with the idea of “ Second Hand Low ”
You are second hand when the lead comes from your right , whether from Declarer or Dummy . The advice is about what to do when a small card has been called for from Dummy or led by Declarer . What should the Defender do ?
