Boys Support the Seeing Eye

Saint David ’ s has a longstanding mission-centric , beloved tradition with The Seeing Eye : Pennies for Puppies , Dollars for Dogs . Our fourth-grade students took their service work to a new level of achievement this past spring . In beginning their research and understanding of the cause , boys learned about the Seeing Eye Foundation , an organization that breeds , raises , and trains Seeing Eye dogs to help guide blind people . After becoming more familiar with the goals and work of the foundation , they participated in a Read- A-Thon ; and it was during this fundraiser that students read and recorded the total number of pages that they read , both in and outside of school each day . Readers raised money by asking family and / or friends to “ Pledge Per Page ” or “ Set Donation ” contributions . Each boy then kept a paper copy of their reading log in their binder .
Throughout the fundraiser , the boys also organized time to visit other Saint David ’ s homerooms to collaborate for the cause . As a culminating milestone for the service project , the entire fourth grade took a field trip to Morristown , NJ , to visit the Seeing Eye Foundation and to present their total fundraising donation ( in excess of $ 10,000 ). In conclusion of this service work , Saint David ’ s boys gained valuable insight to diversity and inclusion of people with disabilities , while also experiencing the capabilities of people who are blind . Our boys also learned the etiquette of how to effectively communicate , and experienced first-hand the importance of philanthropy and giving back to the community .
