AROUND CAMPUS
The Life of Bees
In spring , a beekeeper returned for a third consecutive year to lead science classes for our Kindergartners , Alpha Class , Second , and Fifth Graders .
As an extension of their science class study , the boys focused on the anatomy of bees and how they work together in the hive ; all performing different jobs as part of a community . The beekeeper came to deepen their knowledge and introduce the boys to some real bees , in addition to teaching them about how humans and bees work together . Second graders who study botany , including pollination , learned about bees ’ roles as pollinators with the beekeeper ’ s visit . Fifth graders also study pollination and insect traits , which is the curricular connection within the unit .
Service Learning in Central Park
In May , fifth graders made their second service-learning trip to Central Park , where they worked with the Central Park Conservancy to preserve and enhance parts of the park that we use frequently throughout the year . The boys prepared areas for spring turnover and planting , removed invasive plants and weeds , and helped in the restoration of park areas and habitats .
