The banking of education Reflection
Banking education is a term used by
Paulo Freire to describe and critique
the traditional education system. The
name refers to the metaphor of
students as containers into which
educators must put knowledge. This
reinforces a lack of critical thinking
and
knowledge
ownership
in
students, which in turn reinforces
oppression,
as
well
as
it
misrepresents Freire's understanding
of knowledge as the result of a
human, creative process. The role nowadays of the teachers
could be different that in the past, the
main actor of this process is the
student, when the teacher has the
attention; the students are passive
elements of the learning process.
The term banking education was first
used by Paulo Freire in his highly
influential book Pedagogy of the
Oppressed. Freire describes this form
of education as "fundamentally
narrative character with the teacher
as the Subject (that is, the active
participant) and the students as
passive objects.
The active participation of the
students inside of learning process is
the only option where they can
develop their capacities, analysis, and
critical thinking.
The
invitation
to
an
active
participation not is a obligation but is
a necessary change.
